Temperament of the Whippet

Whippets have an incredibly gentle and patient nature. They are tolerant and affectionate to their owners. Whippets were bred for racing, so whilst their instincts are competitive when racing, they are adaptable and quiet dogs. They love being in the company of people, and are gentle with children, although supervision with children is always advised. Children can handle them roughly.

What are the exercise requirements of a Whippet?

As with all breeds, Whippets need their daily dose of exercise. Whippets are capable of short and sharp bursts of incredible speed due to their racing abilities, but are also capable of more extended periods of play if required. Make sure that they are exercising on clear, level surfaces as the combination of their high speeds and thin skin can cause injuries if they fall.

What are the health concerns of a Whippet?

As with any breed, the Whippet is prone to some health conditions that buyers should be aware of. Whippets do not carry excessive weight well. It is recommended that you ensure that your adult Whippet maintains a healthy weight. For adults, 2 - 4 vertebrae should be visible, and the hip bones should not appear sunk into dimples of fat. Correct weight will reduce the risk of orthopaedic problems. Whippets also have thin skin. A combination of their high speeds, thin skin and uneven ground can cause scratches and lacerations as well as other limb injuries.

What is a suitable home for a Whippet?

The Whippet will benefit from a sporting family that is willing to engage them in high energy activities, and spend lots of time with them. They are usually good with children, however it is advised that an adult always be present to supervise as children can be rough with them. Whippets love being next to their people, and engaging in any activity that their owners may find themselves in, whether it be going outside for a walk, or simply lying down on the couch.
